Austrian Summer Ideas

Glacier country
The small alpine country is home to some mighty big summer ski names. Examples? I thought you’d never ask. There’s the Stubai Valley not far from Innsbruck, the Hintertux Glacier not far from Innsbruck, the Solden Glacier closer to the Vorarlberg, the glacier at Kaprun, not far from Salzburg city and the Kaunertal glacier farther from Salzburg but probably closest to that airport.
Kaprun and the Stubai glacier are probably best known to foreigners. The former is tucked neatly under Austria ’s highest mountain, the Kitzteinhorn and the latter rests at the end of one of the most interesting and beautiful valley routes from civilization, the Stubai Valley .
Kaprun
is partnered with the bigger and more lively town of Zell am See – guess what, its got a See, which is German for lake.
The Stubai area is best known for the small grouping of lovely villages at the entrance to the valley. A car drive from the Autobahn to the glacier is a worth while day trip for the family. The skiing is a treat for those that want to practice their sport all year round.
Now this is not to Pooh Pooh either the Hintertux or Solden glaciers.
For the former a long road from the Autobahn through Mayrhofen and up to the Tux valley which ends in Hintertux is your route. The skiing is probably more extensive than the Stubai glacier and Hintertux serves as a training ground for beaucoup national ski teams.
If Solden is your choice, then you will probably want to stay in the town of the same name. As mountain small cities go this one is fairly big, so although the skiing is extensive for a summer offering it is not the only game in town.
Kaunertal is really less well known to this writer and I suspect not at all on the map ceptin’ for the most knowledgeable of you.
